Bitcoin Has Slowed After a 40% Rally. Can It Go Higher?

Bitcoin's rally is taking a breather.

BTC has gained more than 40% over the third quarter, rebounding from around $75,000 to above $87,000 before pulling back toward the $83,000–$84,000 area. The move has been impressive — but the market is now asking a harder question: can Bitcoin keep climbing from here?

The Money Is Still Coming In

One reason the recent rally still has a solid foundation is institutional demand.

U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs attracted around $2.4 billion in net inflows between September 21 and 25, pushing 2026 ETF flows back into positive territory. Strategy also added another 1,665 BTC to its holdings in late September, taking its total stash to more than 847,000 BTC.

That is an important shift from earlier in the year, when heavy outflows weighed on Bitcoin.

But there is a catch.

Yields Are Getting in the Way

Bitcoin's latest pullback has come as U.S. Treasury yields moved sharply higher. That matters because Bitcoin still trades as a risk-sensitive asset, and higher yields can make non-yielding assets less attractive.

Recent market analysis also points to slowing spot demand and some profit-taking after the sharp rebound.

So the setup is becoming more balanced:

Strong ETF inflows support Bitcoin, while higher yields and profit-taking are keeping buyers cautious.

Can Bitcoin Break Higher?

The $87,000 area is the first major test.

Bitcoin has already reached that zone once. A sustained break above it would suggest that the latest consolidation is giving way to another leg higher.

But if BTC continues to struggle below that level, the market could remain range-bound while investors wait for another catalyst.

Some analysts remain structurally bullish. CryptoQuant CEO Ki Young Ju has argued that greater institutional ownership could make the current bull cycle less volatile and potentially allow further upside.

For BTCUSD, the bullish case is still alive — but $87,000 needs to turn from resistance into support before the next major move higher can really gain momentum.
