Oil Is Back in the Danger Zone as Iran Supply Comes Under Threat

Oil is heading for another strong week as the latest escalation between the US and Iran raises fresh concerns over global supply.

October WTI futures are trading above $86 a barrel, up nearly 6% this week, while Brent settled near $94 after rising for five straight sessions.

The latest move comes as Washington prepares new measures aimed at isolating Iran economically. US officials are also moving to restrict Iranian oil exports, while talks between Washington and Tehran have been put on hold.

The supply picture is already tightening.

Iran's central bank governor said this week that the country's crude exports had “effectively stalled” amid the pressure on its ports. Any prolonged disruption would remove a significant amount of supply from an already tense market.

Then there is the Strait of Hormuz.

The waterway remains the key pressure point. Iran has warned that it could retaliate if its interests are targeted, keeping the risk of further disruption firmly in the oil market's pricing.

The latest rally is not only about Iran, either.

Ukraine has also stepped up attacks on Russian refineries and ports, disrupting parts of the country's fuel industry and adding to tightness in global diesel markets.

That gives oil a strong fundamental backdrop heading into next week.

WTI has already gained more than 50% this year, so the market is no longer starting from a low base. That makes the next move increasingly dependent on whether the latest geopolitical risks actually translate into sustained supply losses.

For traders, $90 on WTI is now becoming the level to watch.

A break above it would put the recent rally back into focus, while any meaningful progress in US-Iran talks could quickly remove part of the geopolitical premium.

For now, the market is watching the same question from both sides: how much Iranian oil can actually make it onto the global market?
