Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi said Beijing welcomes deeper cooperation with Swedish and European businesses during a meeting with Investor AB Chairman Jacob Wallenberg in Stockholm, as China continues efforts to strengthen engagement with foreign investors ahead of a China-EU leaders' summit later this month.
Fundamental Drivers
According to China's Foreign Ministry, Wang said the Wallenberg family was among the first European business groups to invest in China following the country's reform and opening-up policies, contributing to economic ties between the two countries over several decades. He added that he hopes the family and Sweden's broader business community will continue supporting efforts to improve bilateral relations, while Beijing and Stockholm work to expand practical cooperation.
Wang also reiterated China's commitment to boosting domestic demand, expanding high-level opening-up, and supporting free trade and market-oriented principles, saying these measures would create opportunities for foreign companies operating in China.
The meeting comes as Chinese policymakers continue efforts to support foreign investment amid slower economic growth, softer consumer demand and ongoing geopolitical tensions with several Western economies. Authorities have introduced a range of measures aimed at encouraging multinational companies to maintain or expand their operations in China.
China-EU relations have seen renewed diplomatic engagement in recent months, although differences remain over trade, electric vehicles and technology exports. European business groups have continued to call for improved market access and greater regulatory transparency in China.
What's Next
Markets will watch the upcoming China-EU leaders' summit later this month, where trade, investment and broader economic cooperation are expected to remain central topics alongside wider geopolitical issues.
