Dollar at a Crossroads: U.S. Data Could Set the Next Move

The dollar is holding steady against most Asian currencies, but the calm may not last.

Investors are turning their attention to the University of Michigan’s preliminary consumer sentiment index, which could offer fresh clues about U.S. household confidence, inflation expectations and the resilience of consumer spending.

The timing matters. After a sharp rise in long-term U.S. Treasury yields this week, stronger consumer sentiment or rising inflation expectations could reinforce concerns that interest rates will stay elevated for longer, potentially supporting the dollar. Weaker data, on the other hand, could ease some of that pressure.

What to Watch in FX

The latest moves remain modest. USD/JPY was up 0.07% at 157.98, while USD/KRW slipped 0.08% to 1,341.28. AUD/USD gained 0.3% to 0.6974.

For forex traders, the next move may depend on whether U.S. data reinforces the case for higher yields or gives markets more reason to expect monetary easing. Treasury yields and further comments from Fed officials will also remain in focus.

For USD/JPY in particular, the key question is whether rising U.S. yields can keep the dollar supported near current levels.
