US Mint to Produce Commemorative $1 Coin Featuring President Trump for America's 250th Anniversary

The U.S. Mint will produce commemorative $1 coins featuring President Donald Trump as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of the United States, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed on Wednesday. According to Bessent, production has already begun at the Philadelphia Mint.

The final coin design includes the inscriptions "Liberty," "In God We Trust," and "1776–2026" alongside President Trump's portrait on the obverse, while the reverse features a bald eagle based on the presidential seal.

According to Reuters, an earlier design proposal included an image of Trump with a raised fist and the phrase "fight, fight, fight," referencing the 2024 assassination attempt. That design was later revised before production.

Questions have been raised regarding the legal basis for the commemorative coin. Reuters reported that a law enacted in 2020 authorizing the 250th-anniversary coin program includes provisions regarding depictions of living individuals. Treasury Secretary Bessent stated that separate legislation governing U.S. paper currency does not apply to coins produced by the U.S. Mint.

Bessent also referred to the appearance of President Calvin Coolidge on a commemorative coin issued during his presidency as an example discussed in relation to the current program.

Any legal or regulatory review could influence the implementation of the commemorative coin program ahead of the 2026 anniversary, although no changes have been officially announced.
