WTI Surges 5% On US-Iran Military Escalation; AO Signals Sharp Short-Term Rebound

WTI crude (XTIUSD) extended its rally during Wednesday’s Asian session after posting nearly 5% gains in the prior trading day, hovering around $72.20 per barrel. Oil markets caught a strong geopolitical bid as the US carried out new airstrikes against Iran and scrapped a long-standing sanctions waiver that allowed Iran to export crude globally.

Tensions have flared after Iran launched repeated attacks on commercial vessels navigating the Strait of Hormuz, including a Qatari LNG carrier and a Saudi oil tanker. The conflict threatens to collapse the fragile interim US-Iran detente and stokes fears of major supply disruption, as shippers and regional producers actively avoid the vital chokepoint that handles roughly 20% of the world’s crude flow.

Earlier during European hours, WTI advanced 1% to near $69.40, also driven by vessel attack headlines that reignited supply risk premiums.

Technical Outlook

The Awesome Oscillator (AO) shows strengthening short-term bullish momentum for WTI crude.

If prices break above and hold steady above the $70 psychological threshold, bulls may target resistance near the $80 zone in the short run.

Despite the immediate rebound momentum, the medium-term bearish trend remains intact since the March 9 peak. The upward bounce is framed as a corrective rally within the broader downtrend, rather than a full trend reversal.

Key Technical Levels

- Immediate support: $70.00

- Near-term resistance target: $80.00

- Long-term structural trend: Bearish from March highs

AO’s improved reading signals a clear recovery in short-term buying power, yet traders must watch whether price can sustain above $70 to validate further upside. Failure to hold this mark will likely send crude back toward lower support and reinforce the dominant medium-term downtrend.
