Yen Strengthens as BOJ Rate Hike Bets Surge — USD/JPY in Focus

The Japanese yen strengthened sharply on Thursday as markets increased bets on a Bank of Japan rate hike this month. USD/JPY fell toward 158, while the yen also gained against the euro and pound.

The move followed hawkish comments from BOJ board member Hajime Takata, who called for a more flexible approach to rate increases as inflation risks remain elevated. Markets are now pricing in a September hike at close to full probability.

For USD/JPY, the direction is becoming clearer: stronger BOJ tightening expectations are supporting the yen, while any decline in U.S. rate-hike expectations could add further downside pressure to the pair.

However, the U.S. August jobs report remains a major risk. A stronger-than-expected NFP could lift U.S. yields and support the dollar, potentially limiting the yen’s gains.

For FX traders, the key battle is now between a more hawkish BOJ and the Fed’s rate outlook. USD/JPY could remain highly volatile as both central banks approach their September meetings.
