Fed Hike Odds Are Just 16%. So Why Does October Still Matter?

For weeks, the October Fed meeting looked almost predictable.

Markets expected policymakers to leave rates unchanged — and they still do. Interest-rate futures currently put the probability of an October hike at just 16%.

But after the latest inflation data, the meeting may no longer be quite so straightforward.

September CPI rose 3.7% year over year, above expectations, while core inflation accelerated to 2.6%. The numbers reinforced concerns that inflation is proving harder to bring down than the Fed would like.

That doesn't necessarily mean an October hike is coming.

Several Fed officials have signaled that there is little urgency to move immediately, giving policymakers room to wait for more data before tightening again.

But the bigger question is shifting from October to December.

Even if the Fed holds rates steady next week, a more hawkish statement could strengthen expectations for another hike later this year.

For traders, that distinction matters:

Hawkish Fed → higher yields and stronger USD → pressure on XAUUSD, EURUSD and risk assets

More cautious Fed → lower yields and softer USD → potential support for gold and risk assets

So the October decision itself may not deliver the biggest surprise.

The real market mover could be what the Fed tells us about December.
