Gold Rises Nearly 1% After Fed Holds Rates as Weaker Dollar Offsets Oil-Driven Headwinds

Gold prices advanced on Wednesday as a weaker U.S. dollar following the Federal Reserve's decision to leave interest rates unchanged provided support, while higher oil prices linked to developments in the Middle East limited additional gains. Spot gold rose 1% to $4,064.33 an ounce, while gold futures settled 0.7% higher at $4,065.75.

Fed Keeps Rates Unchanged as Policy Differences Persist

The Federal Open Market Committee (FOMC) left interest rates unchanged for a fifth consecutive meeting, in line with market expectations. Expectations for additional policy tightening had increased in recent weeks amid concerns that higher oil prices could add to inflation pressures.

Three regional Federal Reserve officials voted in favor of a 25-basis-point rate increase, highlighting differing views within the committee over the appropriate policy path.

Collin Martin, head of fixed income research at Schwab Center for Financial Research, said the vote reflected differing views on the policy outlook. He noted that stronger-than-expected inflation data in the coming months could increase expectations for additional tightening. Martin also identified tariffs, AI-related capital spending, and Middle East developments affecting oil prices as factors that could influence the inflation outlook, while noting that longer-term inflation expectations remain relatively stable.

The Federal Reserve chair described the discussions as active and robust, adding that the dissents did not fully reflect the breadth of the committee's deliberations. Meanwhile, the rise in the 10-year U.S. Treasury yield since June has contributed to tighter financial conditions.

Middle East Developments Support Oil Prices

Oil prices rose on Wednesday as investors monitored developments in the Middle East and assessed their potential implications for energy markets and broader market sentiment.

Market Focus

Investors are expected to continue monitoring upcoming U.S. inflation data, Federal Reserve communications, and developments in the Middle East, as these factors may continue to influence gold prices and broader financial markets.
