Russia Launches Large Missile Attack on Kyiv, Ukrainian Officials Report

Russia launched an overnight missile attack on Kyiv involving 41 ballistic missiles, in what Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy described as one of the largest missile barrages since the start of the war.

According to Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko, at least one person was killed and 16 others were injured, including three who remained in serious condition. Residential buildings, warehouses, a supermarket, a student dormitory, and a metro station were among the sites reported damaged.

Ukraine's Air Force said it intercepted 18 of the 41 ballistic missiles and 108 of 125 drones launched during the attack.

Separate strikes on Sunday also killed four people at a postal facility near Kharkiv and at least two more in Zaporizhzhia, where emergency crews continued search-and-rescue operations as of Sunday evening, according to Ukrainian authorities.

The attacks come as Ukrainian officials say the country continues to face shortages of U.S.-made air defense systems. Zelenskyy said last week that Washington and Kyiv had reached a political agreement to license domestic production of Patriot interceptor missiles, with production expected to begin later this year, although existing supplies remain under pressure.

"Protection against ballistic missiles is our constant and top priority right now," Zelenskyy wrote on X, adding that interceptor missiles are needed on a daily basis.

Recent attacks have also drawn attention in energy markets because of their potential implications for regional refining capacity and European energy supply, alongside broader geopolitical developments affecting global oil markets.
