The British Pound (GBP) remained relatively resilient as the United Kingdom continued to navigate political developments and fiscal uncertainty. Market participants continued to monitor domestic economic conditions, monetary policy expectations and capital flows as key factors influencing Sterling.
According to OCBC strategists, the Bank of England's (BoE) gradual approach to monetary policy easing has continued to provide support for Sterling by maintaining relatively attractive yield differentials. The bank said these factors have had a greater influence on the currency than recent political developments, including policy proposals put forward by prime ministerial candidate Andy Burnham, while investors await greater clarity on the UK's fiscal outlook.
From a technical perspective, UOB said recent price action suggested an improvement in short-term momentum for GBP/USD following a break above its previous downward trend. However, the bank noted that the pair continued to face technical resistance at higher levels, with further price action likely to depend on incoming economic data and broader market conditions.
Looking ahead, OCBC expects EUR/GBP to remain relatively stable until additional details emerge from the UK's Autumn Budget, while UOB said GBP/USD could continue trading within recent ranges as market participants assess monetary policy expectations and economic developments.
Investors are expected to remain focused on Bank of England policy signals, fiscal developments and upcoming economic data for further indications of the outlook for Sterling.
