Oil Falls on Iran Negotiation Hopes as Yen Strengthens Following Fresh Intervention Signals

Risk sentiment shifted on Monday as easing Middle East tensions weighed on oil prices while renewed Japanese currency intervention supported the yen. Brent crude fell more than 6% to $82.41 a barrel after President Trump confirmed that negotiations with Iran would proceed on Monday following the cancellation of a previously planned military strike.

Equity markets showed mixed performance:

  1. S&P 500 futures: +0.4%
  2. Nasdaq futures: +0.6%
  3. Nikkei 225: -1%
  4. KOSPI: -3.6% (after a 22% decline in July)
  5. MSCI Asia-Pacific ex-Japan: -1%

Separately, the yen strengthened by more than 1% to 155.39 against the U.S. dollar after Japan's Ministry of Finance confirmed coordinated yen-buying intervention with the United States, while indicating that additional measures remain possible if needed.

Views among market analysts remain mixed. Mizuho Bank's Masayuki Nakajima said structural factors, particularly the interest-rate differential between the United States and Japan, continue to weigh on the yen over the longer term, although stronger U.S.-Japan coordination could discourage some speculative positioning in the near term.

ATFX's Nick Twidale offered a different perspective, saying President Trump's description of the intervention as a "friendship" gesture could limit its perceived effectiveness. He added that the currency could face renewed pressure if the effects of intervention diminish without broader changes in underlying economic fundamentals.

Some analysts view the recent strength in the yen as potentially temporary rather than indicative of a broader structural trend. Meanwhile, lower oil prices could help ease inflationary pressures if sustained, although the broader impact on financial markets will continue to depend on incoming economic data and geopolitical developments, including U.S. labor market figures scheduled for later this week.
