Taiwan's Mangoes Head to Europe as Trade Diversification Accelerates

Taiwan shipped its first major fresh mango consignment to Europe in June, with a six-tonne shipment entering France through the Rungis International Market and a separate 500kg shipment of premium Irwin mangoes arriving in the UK. The move reflects Taiwan's broader efforts to diversify agricultural export markets.

Export trends

  1. Taiwan's mango exports are projected to increase by approximately 2.5–2.6 times year-on-year in 2026.
  2. Premium mangoes have been retailing at around €18–28 per fruit during initial market testing in Europe.
  3. Taiwan produces more than 170,000 metric tons of mangoes annually, while historically only about 2.2% of production has been exported.
  4. Exports to mainland China have fallen sharply since import restrictions were introduced, declining from a pre-restriction peak of roughly 9,000 tons per year to near zero.

Background

Mainland China suspended imports of Taiwanese mangoes in 2023, citing concerns over mealybug pests. The suspension followed similar restrictions on Taiwanese pineapples, wax apples and citrus fruits. Taiwan's government has described these measures as politically motivated trade restrictions rather than being solely based on phytosanitary concerns. President Lai Ching-te reiterated this position last month.

Expanding market access

Taiwan has also sought to expand exports to other destinations. South Korea reduced tariffs on Taiwanese mangoes from 30% to 5% through mid-August as part of efforts to facilitate imports. Meanwhile, Taiwan has introduced air freight subsidies to support exports to Europe despite higher transportation costs.

Market outlook

The latest developments highlight a broader trend among some Asian exporters seeking to diversify export destinations and reduce reliance on individual markets. Taiwan's experience may provide an example of how alternative export channels can be developed while also illustrating the additional costs associated with market diversification.
