PCE Could Reprice the Fed’s Next Move

The Fed may be divided on what comes next. Tonight's inflation data could make that debate even more important.

The August PCE price index is due at 8:30 p.m. Singapore time, with economists expecting headline PCE to remain at 3.7% year over year and core PCE at 3.3% — both well above the Fed's 2% target.

That leaves little room for an obvious dovish signal.

Why This PCE Matters

The market was recently leaning toward another rate hike in October. But that view has started to soften.

New York Fed President John Williams said there is no urgency for another hike, pushing October rate-hike expectations lower. At the same time, Fed Governor Michael Barr argued that further tightening may still be needed as inflation remains elevated.

That makes tonight's PCE particularly important.

A hotter-than-expected reading could strengthen the case for another hike, potentially lifting Treasury yields and the dollar. A softer reading, meanwhile, could give policymakers more room to wait — easing some pressure on bonds and risk assets.

The real question is no longer whether inflation is above target. It is whether the data gives the Fed a reason to tighten again — or a reason to wait.

For markets, that could mean a sharp reaction across USD, gold and U.S. indices if the PCE number surprises either way.
