USD/JPY Holds Below 162.00 as Tokyo Inflation Supports BoJ Expectations While Rate Differentials Favor the Dollar

USD/JPY traded just below 162.00 during Friday's Asian session, remaining close to multi-decade highs as investors weighed stronger inflation data from Japan against the still-wide interest rate differential between Japan and the United States. While Tokyo's latest consumer price figures reinforced expectations that the Bank of Japan (BoJ) may continue policy normalization, the U.S. dollar continued to benefit from comparatively higher interest rates.

Tokyo Inflation Signals Persistent Price Pressures

Japan's latest Tokyo Consumer Price Index (CPI), often viewed as a leading indicator for nationwide inflation, showed that price pressures continued to broaden in June.

Headline inflation accelerated to 1.7% year-over-year, while core CPI, which excludes fresh food, increased to 1.6%. Meanwhile, core-core CPI, excluding both fresh food and energy, rose to 1.9%, suggesting that underlying inflationary pressures remain present beyond energy-related factors.

The figures strengthened market expectations that the Bank of Japan could gradually continue its policy normalization process if inflation remains sustainable. However, investors generally expect Japanese interest rates to remain significantly lower than those in the United States for the foreseeable future.

Rate Differentials Continue to Support USD/JPY

Despite improving inflation data in Japan, the substantial interest rate gap between the Federal Reserve and the Bank of Japan remains one of the primary drivers of USD/JPY.

Recent U.S. inflation data reinforced expectations that the Federal Reserve could maintain relatively restrictive monetary policy, supporting U.S. Treasury yields and the dollar. At the same time, investors continue to monitor whether softer energy prices in coming months could moderate inflation and influence future policy expectations.

Markets Also Watch Geopolitical Developments

Investors are also monitoring reports of security incidents affecting commercial shipping near the Strait of Hormuz. Renewed geopolitical uncertainty has contributed to demand for traditional safe-haven assets, including the U.S. dollar, although the overall market reaction has remained measured.

For Asian markets, developments affecting regional shipping routes may also influence transportation costs, energy prices and broader market sentiment.

Technical Levels

Initial resistance is located around 162.00, with the next resistance area near 163.00–163.50 if upward momentum strengthens.

On the downside, initial support is seen between 160.50–161.00, followed by a stronger support zone around 159.00.

Technical indicators suggest USD/JPY remains within a broader upward trend, although investors continue to monitor monetary policy expectations and potential volatility surrounding official comments on currency movements.

Market Focus

Market participants will closely monitor upcoming U.S. economic data, Bank of Japan communications, Federal Reserve commentary and geopolitical developments for additional guidance on USD/JPY's near-term direction.
