Why Is Gold Falling?

Why Is Gold Falling?

The latest selloff is unusual because some of gold’s traditional headwinds are actually easing. The dollar has weakened and Treasury yields have fallen, yet gold has struggled to find support.

“The movement is very abnormal,” said independent precious metals analyst Jesse Colombo, who pointed to the unusual divergence between gold, the dollar and bond yields.

One explanation is that the selloff in AI and technology stocks is spilling into other markets. As equity losses deepen, investors may be selling liquid assets such as gold to raise cash or meet margin requirements.

Justin Lin, an analyst at Global X ETFs, described the move as a “liquidity-driven selloff,” noting that gold can become a source of cash during sharp market downturns.

That would help explain why gold is falling even as yields decline — investors may not be selling because the outlook for gold has suddenly changed, but because they need liquidity elsewhere.
