Indian Rupee Outperforms Asian Peers as Lower Oil Prices Support Currency Stability

The Indian Rupee was among the strongest-performing Asian currencies in June, supported by lower global oil prices, improving foreign portfolio investment, and the country's substantial foreign exchange reserves. According to Commerzbank Research, these factors have helped USD/INR remain near 94.40, close to the lower end of its recent 94–96 trading range.

Recent improvements in shipping conditions through the Strait of Hormuz have contributed to lower crude oil prices, providing support for the Indian economy. As one of Asia's largest energy importers, India benefits from lower oil prices through reduced import costs, easing inflation pressures and helping narrow the current account deficit. These developments have also improved investor sentiment toward Indian financial assets.

According to Commerzbank Research, foreign portfolio investment has gradually returned after geopolitical tensions in the Middle East prompted capital outflows from many emerging markets. The recovery in investment flows has provided additional support for the Rupee beyond the impact of lower energy prices.

Data released by the Reserve Bank of India showed that the country's foreign exchange reserves increased by 0.1% to USD 672.6 billion in the week ending 19 June. The sizeable reserve position provides the central bank with greater flexibility to manage currency volatility when necessary, which may help reinforce investor confidence.

Commerzbank Research expects lower oil prices, continued portfolio inflows and adequate foreign exchange reserves to remain supportive for the Rupee in the near term. At the same time, the bank noted that global crude oil prices remain one of the key external factors influencing the currency. Any renewed disruption to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz could affect both oil prices and market sentiment toward emerging-market assets.
